Creative Motion, by Margaret Allen and Anne Niles, was first published in 1971 and served as the primary sourcebook of information on the Creative Motion approach to musical understanding. Creative Motion, developed by Martha Stockton Russell in the 1920s, is based upon the principle that the most authentic, and therefore most musical, response of an individual to the demands of the musical score (or any stimulus) will feature an integration of the mind and body. Therefore, Creative Motion recognizes the necessity of inward sensing guilding outward movement.
Creative Motion, 2nd edition (2010) contains the original text and is supplemented with commentaries and articles by current teachers of Creative Motion. Newly added drawings of various Creative Motion exercises help make them accessible to readers and practitioners. Contributors to the new edition include Marilyn Alcala, Jane Silvey Andrews, Eileen Auxier, Mary Ann Fritz, Frank A. Heller III, Mary-Hannah Klontz, Harold V. McKinney, Twila M. Miller, John A. Morrison, Virginia Brown Murphy, Phyllis Pasley, Rachel Sherman, and Robert C. Smith.
